It has been several years since I have become part of the remote freelancing landscape. In the beginning, it was challenging and required a lot of patience. Mainly since you compete with people worldwide and there were a lot of lessons that I had to learn on my own.
Not knowing those lessons cost me losing some potential opportunities, dealing with unpleasantness, and re-assessing the type of work and clients I worked with. And there are other things that I would have never imagined that I had to consider in this work modality but that I wished I had known since the beginning.
Nevertheless, in the end, I was able to establish myself and have the contracts, the work, and the life that I never imagined I would have had as an engineer:
-
From working at an engineering firm in a cubicle Monday through Friday and sometimes Saturday, from 9 to 5, which wasn't bad since I didn't know there was a better alternative at the time.
-
To decide when, where, how, and what I will work on.
All these, for a rate that probably would have been hard or impossible, to get where my residence is located, which is not the US, where I resided for some years, or Europe, which is one of my favorite destinations as a digital nomad.
And all these resulted in me taking my craft to the next level and exceeding my client's expectations, at least most of them.
By being able to organize my time and produce on my terms, I was able to deliver outstanding results to my clients and work on my initiatives (jprdv.com being one of them).
But freelancing has its tradeoffs and challenges that make it unsuitable for everybody because something that they don't tell you often is that freedom comes with a lot of risks. Your decisions have consequences that, as a freelancer, you will have to deal with on your own.
Because the freedom and flexibility that come from freelancing provide you the means to rise above most, but also you can also fall lower and harder than most.
Fortunately, freelancing is not something you have to commit to fully, or not at all, since you can make it fit your time and needs. So, you can always test what it is like without significant investment or consequences.
Being good at what you do, offering excellent sustainable service, and dazzling your clients are the foundation of your success as a freelancer. But that is not all: how you relate to your clients, how you price yourself, how you negotiate your contracts, the best times of the year to find work, and many others; in my experience, they are essential to your success as your skills.
And also, the landscape of remote freelancing (and freelancing in general) has changed a lot.
Now there are considerably more clients since freelancing and remote work are becoming common in many places. So naturally, this means more competition but also more opportunity.
A few years back, I would have told you that freelancing is not for everyone, and indeed, that is the case if you would consider becoming a full-time freelancer. Nevertheless, there has never been a better time to become one, especially for remote freelancing.
Because of the rise of the gig/task economy and how straightforward it can be to establish means to earn additional income, I believe that everybody should at least get initiated and know the options out there. From highly skilled technical work to basic tasks such as giving your opinion, freelancing and the gig/task economy can become your best allies when controlling your income flow.
So, in Freelanstyle, we aim to become your go-to source of information on deciding whether or not freelancing is for you and, if it is, how you can (through all the novelties, news, and tips that we will provide) take your freelancing to the place that you want in your life. And we do this by sharing our experience with you and teaching you all the great secrets that I wish I had known when I got started and could have saved me a lot of pain, effort, and time.
Finally, as the freelancing and task economy services and tools change and evolve due to technology, we will keep you updated about the latest and best services you can take advantage of.
